... Bipolar, my brother was then diagnosed with hypothyroidism and told he wasnt bipolar after all
YES! I used to have regular blood tests to check my thyroid by the doctor that prescribed my depression medication. When I no longer had insurance I couldn't go to him. A few years later - my depression got SO bad that I still get scared I'll feel like that again! I went to my state's Dept. of Mental Health and was "diagnosed" as having bi-polar. I was on 2 anti-psychotic medications, and other anti-anxiety and anti-depressants. I felt somewhat better but I was mentally slow and numb. I didn't see what the "bi" part of it was. When I finally had insurance again, I went to a regular family doctor and a psychiatrist.
My family doctor tested my blood - my thyroid was barely working! I got on meds for it, my psychiatrist took me off Lithium and all the other garbage, and I felt SO much better.
I have to make sure I always get my thyroid med refills on time because if I run out, that horrible depression returns!! It was awful! I can't believe a doctor would give me all of that medicine before ruling anything out by a simple blood test!
