I just wanted to add that before my doctor was going to give me this drug, he gave me IV Benadryle, which I have taken the tablet form before no problems. As soon as he gave me the IV I got a rush feeling that I normally don't like, but this kept going and going and would not stop after 30 minutes I was still feeling bad. Has this happened to anyone else? my doctor decided not to give me the Haloperidol after the reaction I had and to be honest I am so glad he didn't I was really not wanting to try this drug.
I cannot believe your doctor was going to give you Haldol for a migraine. I've never heard of that before. A's a nurse, I've seen Haldol given to patients who are completely out of control in a psych unit and it totally knocks them out for several hours!!I wouldn't recommend it at all. I'm sorry to say, there just isn't any cure for migraines. I've had them for over 30 yrs. I got into trouble big time by taking some very strong narcotics over the years for them. A year ago, after nearly 15 yrs. On a daily regimen of narc pain meds, I stopped taking them cold turkey!! A's a nurse I can say that was a really stupid thing to do!! You need to be weaned off of this type of drugs slowly. Anyhow, after 10 days of feeling like I was going to die, I found a Suboxone clinic and made an appt.
A's soon A's I took the first one I started to feel better. I've been on them ever since. now when I get a migraine, the sub helps with the pain. But my migraines went from almost every other day to every few weeks. The narcs I was on were causing rebound H/A's. First I take a Phenergan 25 mg tab, swallow it and then place a sub under my tongue and let it melt. It has an awful bitter taste, so sometimes before the sub I rinse my mouth with a dry mouth wash, and then the taste is easier to take. Phenergan prevents N/V caused by migraines and also helps with the N/V that the sub causes. I do not take anything else but those two and I feel great. A hot bath to relieve muscle tension, and then a cold pack on your head, in a dark room, in bed with absolutely no noise or light is all that ever helped me without using any strong narcs for pain. Good Luck, NIK
I was in the ER last month and the idiots decided they would try that instead of my normal meds. BAD IDEA!! I got the fight or flight reaction which is exactly what you are describing... Like you want to crawl out of your skin... It was horrible! They had to give me a Benadryl injection to stop the reaction within 5 minutes of giving me the Haldol. I can't understand why in the world these docs are giving an anti-psych med for migraines... bad bad idea!! It is now a listed allergy for me. Guess thats what happens when you give normal people psych drugs. Good Luck!
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question, when this drug was suggested to me I was really worried because I always ask for the drug sheet and read about the drug first and me and the nurse at the time could not find anywhere that it said it was used for migraines, I think we ended up talking to the pharmacy who then showed us that yes it is used sometimes for Migraines. But when this drug was suggested the doctor's were getting reallly frustrated because nothing was working, but the update now is they put me on Metoprolol and although it has taken a couple of months to star helping me, it has made a bit of difference to the Migraines. I must also say when you are the patient you have to really trust the doctor working with you, which I did and when I agreed to take the drug it took me hours to decide. But I am so glad eveything worked out the way it did and I wasn't given the drug. Thanks ukliz.
I'm a emergency physician, so I think I know the ED treatment of migraine pretty well. Haloperidol (Haldol) is actually a great drug for migraines. Not the best, but now because of Reglan and Compazine IV now on national shortage, its really the best we have. Narcotics are very poor treatment (makes you dependent and gives rebound headaches). The studies show once NSAIDS (things like naproxen, ibuprofen) and triptans (like Imitrex, Maxalt) dont work at home within the first 2 hours of onset, then drugs like Compazine is really the best treatment once you come to my ED. Droperidol was once the best, but the FDA put a unfounded black box warning on it, so now Haloperidol (just make sure they give you the Benadryl with it to prevent that crawling out of your skin horrible feeling that happens in ~16% of patients) is really the best. Write your Congressman! these drug shortages are really hurting us (literally).
I was in the ED of my local hospital just the other day and the ER doc gave IV Benadryl and Phenergan at first(which didn't work) the he suggested that I give the Haldol a try. Well folks i'm here to tell you that it was the worse mistake I could have allowed! I felt groggy as it was and the with the Haldol on top of that I was in a very "Detatched" state of mind. I have been a 15yr sufferer of migraines, due to a TBI and I am on a pain contract for my chronic pain. I have an accute seizure disorder to go along with everything else! I told the DR. I didn't know enough about the drug, but he was very coinvincing as to the effectiveness of it. It wasn't. A very scary experience from my point of view. I only knew it was used as an anti-Psych drug. I have yet to find any valid info on the effectiveness in treatment of "Cluster combination" migraines. I felt as if he was just trying to "Treat and street" me as fast as he could.
I was given this drug iv at the ER last night while being treated for a migraine headache. I have suffered from migraine headaches for 9 years now. I have seen several different neurologists and take preventative medications and only use the ER as a last resort for this reason. It feels like a house of horrors to me. Im starting to feel like a test rat. The last time I went I had an allergic reaction Toradol. This time They gave me Haloperidol and I i felt like I was dying , couldnt breath and my chest was caving in " fight or flight" that you are describing. It was terrible. Is my headache better. Only sligtly. Is it meant to treat migraines? NO WAY! Iwould say I should Know... I ve had migraines for years and Im the patient. I dont understand why they dont just stick to what worksfor you instead of treating people like an experiment.
I was given a mix of Toradol and haloperidol for my extreme, debilitating migraine at the hospital yesterday.
I honestly don't know why they gave me haloperidol for it but I've had wicked shoulder blade and lower back pain since I woke up this morning.
I am getting iv right now. I came in to er hoping to get home b4 AHS. But i sat in waiting room for one and a half hours. Got the initial cocktail Did not work. It was this first then if not enough relief the dr wanted dhe 45. That is the last ditch effort. Have had haldol the past. works better for me. So im happy that a dr involved me and then asked me what my thoughts were!! Thank you dr Elliot from littleton hospital er!!!
After NOT having any severe migraines for about three-four years, I had a mega migraine. My husband had to take me to the ER. Because I am allergic to everything they had no idea what to give me. I was in extreme pain for hours. They gave me something and after a while when the migraine let up, they sent me home. The next day I looked at my release papers and saw where they gave me Haldol? When I started doing research on the Haldol, I was taken aback as to it uses. Never have I had a psychotic event, nor have I been treated for one. I must say it did get rid of the migraine, but, boy, was I loopy the next day. Not everything works for every body. I'm just glad it worked for me. I know this is eight years after the fact, but I hope you found your answers.
I have had migraines since puberty and have had cluster headaches for the last ten years. Haloperidol is the only thing that has ever helped my cluster headaches. I get relief before they have left the room after injection.
I was at my local ER with stroke like symptoms but turns out I was having a hemiplegic migraine so first the doctor tried Reglan with Benadryl IV for both and did work somewhat but only gave me relief for 20 minutes so then had IV Tylenol but that didn't phase it. The next thing they tried was using warm blankets on my head like a heat wrap which helped. They are giving me Haloperidol in tablet form because I live alone and didn't have anyone to drive me home .. I've had this drug before for anxiety and had a migraine while on a psychiatric unit and they gave me Haloperidol and it quelled the migraine. I used to be able to take sumitriptain but can't now due to having a stroke and being on Plavix.
