Benzodiazepines, such as Xanax, affect certain receptors sites on the cells in your brain. Your brain becomes dependent on the medication in this case. If you were to stop, you would have withdrawal symptoms. Once your body had gone without the medication for a time, it would return to normal though you might then experience the anxiety for which you were originally taking it.
