It is believed that insulin resistance has a large part to play in the development of PCOS. Insulin resistance means your body is resistant to insulin so you need higher levels of insulin to keep your blood sugar normal. Initial treatment in some cases may focus correcting insulin resistance which in turn may improve many other symptoms of the condition.
Metformin (Glucophage) is medication that improves the effectiveness of insulin produced by the body. It was developed as a treatment for type 2 diabetes but has been useful for women with PCOS and weight issues along with attention to diet and exercise.
Improvement of PCOS symptoms has been seen within two or three months but may take up to six months.
