I've never heard of metformin causing kidney problems. It is not reccommended that you take metformin if you have kidney problems because Metformin is related to a class of drugs that can cause lactic acidosis a potentially fatal buildup of acids. Its very rare when taking Metformin though and that doesn't mean that Metformin causes the kidney problems just that the kidneys metabolize the Metformin
