I am on 6 mgs of xanax, and I know what some of you are thinking. (too high of a dose) My problem is, even being on that high of dose I still suffer chronic, severe anxiety, Not only physical symptoms, I will dwell on every problem in my life. I know there has to be a better way to get treatment. I see my doctor on the first of next month and he is a "pill pusher" so I could get prescribed whatever I ask him for. Another symptom is having a naughing (itching) feeling in my stomach. All health problems are ruled out. Does anyone have severe anxiety like mine here? What medication(s) would you reccommend? He also prescribed me pexeva, but I don't have insurance and it's a 300 dollar script. I could always ask for klonopin, ativan, valium or another benzo, but I have been on everything. What can I do? I did say my doctor was a pill pusher, but he is also someone who understands severe anxiety so that is why I am prescribed that high of a dose. I am thinking trying an ssri like paxil. I have had success in the past with it, but a sexual side affect makes me not want to take it. ( no sex drive ) So if someone could please give me advice I would really appreciate it. Last thing, I am dreading going to sleep because when I wake up in the morning I have the most OVERWHELMING feeling of anxiety. Even with klonopin, how it builds up and is longer lasting it still doesn't do the job. Thanks so much in advance!
Unfortunately, the sexaul dysfunction is a problem with many antidepressants that also treat anxiety disorders. I would still recommend them for you. As you said, you are taking a higher dose of Xanax and are still experiencing symptoms so I think an SSRI like Paxil are in order. You may have better luck with Lexapro (escitalopram) as far as sexual side effects. It is very hard to say which woul be the best for you as everyone responds differently. Fortunately there are many SSRIs to choose from. You might also benenfit from the addition of Wellbutrin (bupropion) which for some combats the sexual side effects of the other antidepressant.
I also recommend talk therapy to learn ways to contend and inturn lessen the anxiety. I have found therapy to be very effective in helping treat my anxiety issues. With the appropriate combination of medications and therapy is really is possible to get the anxiety under control.
