i have just recently started using the fentanyl patch instead of morphine. it works better and i'm not so sick and zoned out. the problems i'm running into are it wears off 10 hrs. early EVERY TIME and the nerve pain spikes way above what the patch can handle with higher than normal stress and weather changes. do any of you have those troubles with it and do you supplement with mild hydrocodone or tramadol? thanks to all
I'm not on the Fentanyl patch, but my sister-in-law has been on it for years for fibro. She supplements 3 times a day with oxycodone. Have you tried Avinza? It is a 24 hour time released morphine, and it really does work for at least 23 of the 24 hours as long as you take it at the same time every day. The capsules come in 30mg, 60mg and 90mg. For bone cancer pain, I took 60mg with liquid morphine for breakthrough. Once the tumors were gone, I dropped to 30mg and it totally handled my residual pain. No supplement needed for breakthrough. It can't hurt to talk to your doc about it since the fentanyl is wearing off too soon.
I hope you feel better soon!
Hello Shee and welcome to DC. I am on the Fentanyl patch at 100mg and also change every 3 days. I do take 15mg Oxycodone every 4 hours for breakthrough pain. I also have an neurostimulator implanted in my back with the battery implanted in my buttocks. I still have pain and that is okay. Pain isn't going to kill me and it can wear you down, too. I am still in physical therapy, too, and about to start aquatherapy again in a heated pool. I also get regular therapeutic body massages. I am sharing this information to give you some other options.
Hi Sheelights, my PM Doc has me change my patch every 48 hours as he says they do not last for 72 hours. Have a conversation with your Doc about your pain levels. I keep a daily pain journal and take it with me to my appts. Having some facts written down to discuss with your doctor will be very helpful and it shows that you are being an informed patient. I also print out info from the internet for discussions. Best wishes. Kay
When I was on Fentanyl patches I was on 100mcg/hr, changing every 48 hours and I took hydromorphone 2mg for breakthrough (which really didnt seem to do much over what the Fentanyl did) I liked the pain relief I got with Fentanyl but I had trouble keeping the patches stuck on and then they started to make me blister.
Hi, I was on 200 mcgs of the fentanyl patches. Even with those I still was on 100 mgs of MsContin and for breakthrough pain they had me taking MSIR (morphine sulphate instant release) 30 mgs. I was on all of those for about 5 years. Just be honest with your doctor. They know everyone is an individual and each persons body uses the medications differently. I wish you the best of luck!
