I went to the doctor yesterday, and he prescribed Gabapentin for my Fibromyalgia. I was wondering if anyone has been prescribed this for Fibro, and how well it worked for you. Thank's in advance for any answer's. Ruthie
Neurontin (gabapentin) does help some people with neuropathy. I took it many many years ago before it was used for nerve pain. It is also used as a mood stabilizer as many anticonvulsants are. I'd give it a try. You'll probably have to slowly increase the dose to a theraputic level. Give me a call sometime.
I wish I had an answer for you, I take Gabapentin for problems with a sciatica nerve for which I will have surgery soon. I do know this, prolonged use of Gabapentin can; I stress the word can; destroy the memory areas of your brain. I know it has worked on my memory. Please be careful my dear friend.
Yeah, I take 2400 mg per day of Gabapentin and it's been a lifesaver. It will probably make you a little sleepy until you adjust to it. It's also great as an anti-depressant. Of course, it's also an anti-seizure med. I take lamictal as an anti-seizure med. I'm sure you're going to find some pain relief from it. I'm given the max amount, but never take them all. If I did, you and our other friends would see the ditzy part of me.(Oh, wait! That's already happened.) The first time I took them, I thought "Wow!" this is some drug. I called my psych the next day and told him how well they worked, and he was so glad. It's been a long time since I've had fibro pain. Sometimes, I have to take a vicodin, but very rarely.
Ok, Ruthie Poo. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
God bless you,
Love ya to pieces,
our bodies are so different what might work for you might not work for me!!so i think in about a month you will know if it works for you!!the only thing that helped me was soma's but my pm or my family doctor won't give the because they are so addictive ,plus they can cause other problems just for the life of me can't remember what it was sorry!i too have fibro and i'm a chronic pain suffer!so i do know what your going through !you will just have to try this med and if it doesn't work tell your doctor and i'm sure they will try you on something else!!
I have taken Gabapentin for about 15yr & it has been a Great drug for me. But as you know everybody reacts differently with medications.
Kind of a Funny story my Gynecologist have it to me for Hot Flashes to begin with.
As due to my blood condition I could not take Estrogen & I had a hysterectomy about 19yrs ago & it works Great for Hot Flashes.
Then they decided to increase my dose to help with my Fibro & nerve pain & Neuropathy... And it had helped with all that also.
It is a Very Versatile drug that takes care of alot of medical conditions. I take 900 mg 3x a day.
But just a word of advice DO NOT stop this med. Cold Turkey as it is dangerous.
Oh yeah by the way Missy I am waiting for my email still...
Take care my friend Kathy
Ruthie, no offense honey, but it seems to me that you are a pharmacological experiment!! The rate they keep changing your meds, the different kinds of meds, and they never wait for one to completely clear your body before you are on another one!! I only say this because that had happened to me also. Within a two year period, they had tried and kept up to 37 different medications. I was a mess!! I never had been overweight, and the weight started pouring on me. I had never been depressed, and then I was horribly depressed. One time, my hubby had to call 911, because he couldn't wake me up!! My point is that they do drug trials with all these meds, but they don't do drug trials on multiple meds. Look at how many meds you are on. The interactions between all these different meds could be causing half your problems. It's just a thought. I have read many q's from you over the years, and you list the meds, and honestly it sounds as if you own a drugstore.
I totally understand, you just want to get better. And the doctors want to do something to help you get better, but I have come to realize that drugs are NOT the answer to everything. I'm not totally anti-drug, but I now realize that they did me more harm than good. Just like losing all the weight by stopping one med. So I stopped another, and another, and I haven't felt this well in years. I hate what modern medicine has become. Merely a pill factory, nothing more. What happened to good healthy foods, exercise, and supplements? Since big pharma came into the scene, they have disappeared. Take care of yourself, and kiss your babies. :-)
Although I'm new here, I'd like to share my experience with Gabapentin with you. I've been on 300mgs, 2x a day for the last two years. Although I don't take it fibromyalgia, I take it for nerve pain caused by several back problems. I used to think it wasn't helping very much, if at all. Then one day, my insurance ran out and I was forced to stop taking it. I noticed a considerable change in my pain! I realized it was helping much more than I thought.
I know everyone is different and we all respond to things in our own way. However, I firmly believe this medicine is great! I hope it works for you as well as it has for me!! Good luck!
Who knew!!! The dearest, sweetest lady has asked for help... Ruthie, you are the first responder around here to hand out tea and sympathy to others!
I am taking Gab for my fibro, and it helps certain things for me, (I'm currently titrating off or down to lower mgs), such as twitching muscles and nerves in my entire body. It helped the pain greatly at first. Gab did cause some cognitive problems, for me. I would hunt for a word, it could take up to 30 loooooong seconds for me to finally find the word I wanted. My memory was shot as well as the vocab problem. BUT, it may work like a charm for you dear Ruth, give it a try. It is (as you probably know) the sister-drug to Lyrica.
People who don't do well on Lyrica can generally tolerate gabapentin much better, for some odd reason. And vice versa.
It also is used as an anti-anxiety med, off label. So, if your anxiety may improve greatly. It didn't make me tired, yet I slept much better while taking it. I awoke at 3:30 this morning, because I've just tapered to 3, 300mg Neurontin (or Gabapentin).
As with any medication, it has it's benefits and drawbacks.
As my father would say, "What's worse, the disease, or the cure"!!!
Just kidding you, girl.
Please let us know how you are going on Gab? I'm praying that it is just the thing for your fibro, sweet Ruthie!
Hi, I am new to this site. I just would like to share my experiences with gabapentin. I also have fibro, and several years ago was given lyrica, which I found was allergic to so was put on gabapentin. It also did not work for me either. I had done an MRI directly following, my doctor explained to me that if I didn't have bulging discs or things of that nature the gabapentin might not work. I understood it as there wasnt any interference between the fluid in my spine, bones and spinal cord. As would be the case with a slipped disc ect. I do know it can help with other types of pain as well. But did little for me. All the best to you. ~Jamie
