What does everyone think about gabapentin for severe anxiety. My doctor wants me off Klonopin. Does gabapentin work? I'm also on 150mgs of Effexor XR. I just upped the dosage from 75mg 2 weeks ago. Tthe first week I was feeling great the 2nd week is horrible. Will it get any better. Please help
I have been taking Klonopin for years and want to stop taking it but it is very hard to do that. My doctor has put me on Buspirone (Buspar) which is for anti-anxiety specifically and it has worked wonders. It is a great ant-anxiety medication, for me at least and I've heard a lot of people on here say the same thing. You should do some research on here about that medication and maybe try something like that to replace Klonopin of the Gabapentin doesn't help. I have heard of some doctors using that, and Lyrica to replace Klonopin when they want you off of benzo type medications. I personally have taken Gabapentin for nerve pain and it worked for that, but caused too many other problems for me to keep taking it. I never noticed it helping in any way with anxiety though. Everyone is different, and you doctor may have had success with other patients this way in the past and just wants to give it a shot. If it isn't working for you I would just be honest and tell him/her. That way you can try something that is made for anxiety before it gets too bad again. Hope this helps, good luck to you.
I've never heard of gabapentin being used for anxiety. It is an anti-seizure med the is used a lot to treat pain, specifically nerve related pain, like diabetic neuropathy, I think it is used for fibromyalgia. Of course many of these drugs are tried for other things, sounds like that is what your Dr. is doing.
Doing horrible, meaning you are having more anxiety? How long have you been off of klonopin? Can you do a taper off the klonopin?
I was on gabapentin for chronic abdominal pain that could be nerve related (i.e. they don't know). It didn't help, but I didn't have any side effects from it. I didn't notice any anxiety relieving effect, I still used clonopin (I use the c.. ) for that.
I have used clonopin for about twenty years.. prn, for anxiety. I have never been hooked... I am able to take 1 mg daily for a few weeks if I am going through an anxious period, and then not use it at all for months. Drs don't like it, but at this point in my life (I'm 50) I know what works, and how my body reacts, it's cheap and nothing works as well for me with no side effects.
Good luck. Let us know if it helps at all!
