Six yrs ago I took gabapentin (300 mg at night) for sciatica; worked so well! Now have sciatica again, My doctor said double up to 600 mg of gabapentin before bed, but it does absolutely nothing to relieve pain or even make me sleepy. What's up with gabapentin?
Elinor; Could be a couple of things, Your bought with sciatica could be worse this time. And it is rare and I have not heard of any problems and no recalls on the DEA SITE but some people swear that some of the generics don't work as well as others but I have never had this problem myself. The only difference between brand and Generic is the Binders that hold the medication together. But they are held to the same % 3.5 to 4 I believe room for fixation that is the same as the brand name. Call and let your doctor know. Chuck1957
Gabapentin is actually gabaaminobutyric acid and we have GABA in our brains already. So when we first take it, it works great and you can feel the effects..however the more you take , the less effective it becomes.your brain will only accept so much GABA increases or releases, but even if you don't increase it, it can definitely loose its effectiveness over time due to the withdrawal/tolerance factor of it. And it does have a horribly nasty withdrawal so I wouldn't suggest ever taking more than prescribed. Good luck!
