I go to a clinic and get methadone, I was just wondering what it is like to come off of it when I decide it is time?
As long as the clinic weens you down properly then you can detox with relative ease. The problem usually is the patient gets frustrated with the time it takes to come off methadone. This drug is not heroin or hydrocodone and it doesn't react the same way when you jump off it. The withdrawals are so painful that you will relapse and unfortunately their are people that even commit suicide.
So follow the clinics protocol on weening down and you will have a good detox. The normal detox is to drop the patient down 10% every 4-6 weeks. Once you get down to 20 mgs or so then they have to drop you even less. So it is going to take time but it is worth it in the long run. I can honestly say that I do not know anyone that has successfully jumped off methadone without going back on it, relapsing or dieing... So take care and be prepared for this as it is a long haul that is more than worth it in the end... Dave
HI RTADC2001 I can tell you how it was for my ex-hubby because I was still with him when he came off methadone. First week was not horrible because I was on some of the meds that are used around the country to make it more bearable One is a blood pressure med called clonidine as the methadone leaves your body your blood pressure shoots up and you get some pretty bad headaches, this brings your pressure down somewhat. Then there is another meds commonly prescribed called Phenergan this helps with nausea. You should eat no red meats, get your protien from protien powders that you can add somthing that tastses good to you maybe some fresh berries. Alot of folks will tell you immodium for diareaha.,personally I say let it leave your body. Drink lots of water and lots of non sugary drinks you must replenish your electrolytes.Cool baths hlep with the sweating and lukewarm for the chills. Most important is exercise as soon as you possibly can.... something low impact like swimmng or using a hot tub (depending on where you live in the country). Do not forget important vitamins one is potassiam but if you eat bananas instead you won't have to worry about potassium or having to rin in the bathroom all the time Other vitamins are flaxseed oil, valerian root and a multi vitamin two times a day, All this info came from the web so I am taking some from that and some from experience. All in all it will last two to three months but you will live through it. Not saying you will feel like it but ypu will make it. My husband would actually pound his thighs he said the hurt so bad and he said he couldnt sleep ( he slept more than he said thought cause I watched him. Now here is the irony he got a severe leg and knee injury and one month later I was in an accident and injured My right foot and ankle. We do not live together anymore but we are both on methadone for pain. So that's how I know what its like and why I chose to go on it for pain relief. you will make it and I think be a stronger person for it! Hope that helped
