I had my thuroid removed last feb. for thyroid cancer. I am on levothyroxine 275 mcg /day. I had a tsh drawn 2 months ago and it was .04. I had a repeat on drawn last week and it was 1.7. Why the elevation? The pharmacy i use did not change brands of the medication and I take it faithfully.
Your pituitary can sense the level of thyroid hormone in the bloodstream. It releases TSH when it detects insufficient thyroid hormone.
The results of these tests are complicated and even though your TSH level has gone up it is still considered in the normal range (between 0.3 - 3).
You should talk to your doctor about your results if you are concerned.
Hi I had my thyroid removed 5 years ago for cancer.
They just did a run down off meds to do a full-body scan in Jan and my TSH went up to 127! Which is normal to go up, while having this run down for radiation. But now I'm back on meds it's at 4.81 and the range ends at 4. I was lead to believe that the Dr's were doing the scan as they thought cancer had come back because TSH wasn't as suppressed use to be 0.02-0.04 normally, then it went up to 0.98 and they all seemed to be worried.
Now I went last week to specialist and he tells me "OH NO, we look at Thyroglobulin results not TSH and it must stay below 0.02 otherwise it indicates cancer returned. I'm really stuffed up with the whole thing! I was told that TSH levels could be up because either you missed a does or meds weren't kept in fridge properly or medication old and loosing potentcy or it's very rare but your pituitary gland isn't working properly!
So don't worry, I spoke to a lady the other day who said it took 5 years to get her dose right, everytime your body changes as you mature you may need to change your dose.
Cheers, hope this helps!
