Have you tried the so-called “z drugs”? These would be drugs like Ambien(zolpidem), Lunesta(Eszopiclone), They act on subunits of GABA receptors but are not benzodiazepines. They’re better for sleep initiation and repeated awakenings, but only recommended for short term use. They can be abused/impairing and in the US are schedule 4 controlled substances. I think though they are worth a try rather than benzodiazepines which can knock you out, but mess up your sleep stages so may not feel rested. Plus, benzos can be very hard to stop and can be more dangerous in some respects. However, the Ambien-like drugs have risks too. Discuss tapering off any benzodiazepine you’ve been taking for a while and see if your doctor thinks a short-term trial of the other class I am mentioning would be worth a try. Be safe. Ultimately, in an ideal situation you would find out the cause and go from there, but many times it’s not possible. Good luck.
