I suffer from extreme overheating throughout the day and night and have gained 20 lbs since my total hysterectomy 3 years ago. I am not a candidate for hormone replacement and my doctor has prescribed Neurontin as a possible solution. I am 55 years old. I have only been on it for two days and would like more information.
Hi nanaem, if you go (above) "drugs A to Z" and type neurontin (or gabapentin) into the search engine, you'll find loads of info regarding this medication.
I do know that it's prescribed for a myriad of problems, yet I've not heard of it being prescribed for menopausal symptoms. But it is rx'd "off label" for so many things.
How many miligrams are you prescribed, daily, if you don't mind providing that info?
Welcome to the site.-
There is some evidence of benefit in acquired pendular nystagmus and infantile nystagmus but not in periodic alternating nystagmus. Neurontin (Gabapentin) may help with menopausal symptoms. It may be effective in reducing pain and spasticity in multiple sclerosis.Gabapentin is not supported for alcohol withdrawal, and treatment of smoking cessation have had mixed results.
*Neurontin is used in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia; epilepsy and belongs to the drug class gamma-aminobutyric acid analogs.

3.-User Reviews for Neurontin:
Welcome to the site. I have been on Neurontin/ Gabapentin for about 15yrs due to a complete Hysterectomy. I had Terrible Hot flashes & like you I could not take HRT meds either as I had a blood clot a year after the hysterectomy. They found out I had Factor V Lieden which is a blood disorder that causes me to be on blood thinners the rest of my life.
It took my Drs. quite awhile of trying different meds to help me with the Hot flashes. Then my Gynecologist started me on the Neurontin. It did take about a month to find out if the low dosage was enough to work. Which of course since they start you out on a Very low dosage amount. There was several increases & since I have been on it for 15yrs I have maxed out on the dosage but it still works really well. I currently take 900 mg. 3x day
But you will find that this medication has Alot of medical uses also which is a great benefit. As I also heave nerve pain & Fibromyalgia & it helps with both of these.
So definitely let the Dr. know if the dosage is not working after about 3 weeks. Sometimes it is a slow process to get to YOUR therapeutic level but I think you will be so Relieved that your not standing on a blow torch all the time.
It is very frustrating for "us" that cannot use HRT as it is a roll of the dice to find relief. Take care & let us know how it goes.
