I was prescribed Gabapentin, it's used to control seizures as well a Fibro. pain also. I am just curious if there is any chance of that happening to me.
Hi Stiff Steph,
I've had fibromyalgia a long time and I've never had a seizure. As far as I know it does NOT cause seizures, it is more an autoimmune disease, it doesn't affect the brain like Epilepsy does.
Have a great day Steff!
P.S. I'm sure there are people with both disorders, but that wouldn't be the rule, it would be the exception.
Most medication can be used for treatment of many other conditions such as gabapentin for neuropathy. Each medication may have an ingredient that treat other conditions. It is up to the doctor to prescribe it for the condition he needs to treat. Gabapentin was prescribe to me but I wasn't having seizures. I've never heard it had a side effect to starts seizures. My son took Gabapentin for years and it controlled his seizures until he no longer have them. Hope this helps.
You can have fibromyalgia AND have another medical issue.
I have several chronic illnesses and that is not at all unusual. I have fibro since the 80s and also have a good deal of arthritis in spine and hands and feet etc. the past couple years I also have begun to have partial seizures.
since like many with fibro I have sensitivities to various drugs I am now using gabapentin to control the seizures and help with fibro. Its not the best choice for seizure meds and I dont dare miss a dose. But it is the one I was able to tolerate.
fibro doesn't cause seizures but it doesn't prevent them either. :)
I'm 59, never had a seizure in my life before. In spring, my dosage of gabapentin was increased, 2 months later I was hospitalised with seizures. The hospital's head neurologist is sure gabapentin caused it... 2 CT scans and an EEG were clear, so YES it can cause seizures. Now, I'm on dilantin for 6 months, just for safety sake. Although anything is possible, I've never heard of fibromyalgia as a cause of seizures. If you haven't already, consult a Neurologist.
