Has anyone else here tried taking dextromethorphan for hyperalgesia, allodynia, and opioid tolerance? Now, I already had hyperalgesia and allodynia before taking the opiates that I'm currently on, so I wouldn't be able to tell you if my current level is impacted by my medications. My pain cycles with the seasons, it gets worse in the winter months and gets better in the spring and summer. So I had to increase my breakthrough pain medications, but my tolerance is so high that it didn't seem to have much of an impact. Well, I had been doing some research on NDMA-receptor antagonists and noticed some studies done on dextromethorphan and figured I'd give that a try, since that's readily available, while the others aren't, and also since it's being studied in fibromyalgia pain. I'm currently taking 40mg every 6 hours and I've noticed a HUGE difference in my neuropathic pain, and it's really helping with my breakthrough pain meds too! I was just wondering if anyone else takes dextromethorphan for either or both reasons, how much you take, and how it works for you.
This is fantastic news!! I'm elated for you, hope it continues to help the pain you suffer with on a daily basis, oh heck, every moment!!
I tried taking muscinex for a while, but it had no impact on my pain levels. I have read that there are very specific guidelines that one needs to adhere to whilst on dex., would you share those guidelines with us? I'd love to know why I messed it up whilst taking muscnex! It was my fault, as I did not know all the 'rules', so please, O please, Alice, share the rules with us, IF there actually are guidelines with the use of dex for FMS?
Thank you ever so much and I am thrilled for you!!
I agree this is amazing news. Just did some research on it and I'm very intrigued as I just had to up my ER meds, breakthrough pain peds and add another in. It's freezing cold here, so not only are there tolerance issues but increased seasonal pain as well. Please keep us posted with how this keeps working for you. Yay!!! You have some relief. Makes me so happy!!! Ill send my healing cupcake energy your way so it continues to work but I'm ready to hop in the car now :)))
I don't have fibro, but had developed hyperalgesia and allodynia from taking hydrocodone 40mg per day for about six months. My pain and weird pain kept getting worse and worse. Went to ER a bunch of times till they thought I was a drug seeker. No, my pain was insane. Decided to taper off hydros and did it over 5 weeks. Still have 5mg to go. The hyperalgesia is way better on lower dose. I also read about dextromethorphan. I tried the liquid cough syrup but it gave me stomach aches. Switched to soft gels or pills and I only do about 20 to 30 mg per day (each is 10mg). I totally believe that it helps with some of the withdrawal symptoms and pain. I have been afraid to increase it because of my experience with the cough syrup (which had citric acid, etc. in it). I don't know about long-term use, though. But I am using it on my taper and noticed improvement for sure.
