Can it be used with Oxycodone as a back-up for break-through pain?
I think the Fentanyl patch works well with Oxycodone. I was on Oxycodone before the Fentanyl patch was added. They both got tweaked to where I am the most comfortable. The patch isn't normally used for "break through" pain. It is prescribed in a specific manner and not like a "as needed" medication. You want it to build up in your system to get that "steady" and regular dosing from it.
Do you have any concerns about these meds? Has your doctor already prescribed them to you?
Like lots of people here, I am being treated for multiple conditions and dealing with chronic pain.
I hope you do as well and if you have any concerns or other questions, please don't hesitate to ask, okay?
Blessings and peace to you in your world,
I am on the Fentanyl patch with oxycodone for breakthrough pain and it works great for me. I have had some problems with nausea from the patch but other than that the pain relief has been great. I don't wake up in debilitating pain anymore since the patch keeps a steady amount of medication in your system. Good luck and I hope you get the help you need!!

the oxycodone would be used as the breakthrough med as Mary said, Not the other way around. the fentynal will keep a steady amount of painkiller in your system and you would use the oxy when you get really uncomfortable. I was on it,i did not like it so i went off of it. but it works for alot of people, i hope you are one of those. be very careful being on the patch &oxy. they are a dangerous combo. we wouldn't want Any accidental Od's.
it takes about a month for the patch to really start working. so it will seem you need the oxycodone more now then later. although i have no idea what your illness is and your tolerance to medication.
just b safe!
take care, peace out!
Fentanyl is a great pain med because it covers you all night long, patch stays on for three days, usually, and the pain relief is good. The only problems I have with them, as you are told to change sites with every patch, is the time it takes for the Fentanyl to get thru your skin and start working. That is where the oxycodones come in, they manage the pain until the Fentanyl kicks in.
Fentanyl doesn't take care of all types of pain, at least in my situation. I had a lot of nerve pain that the Fentanyl didn't seem to touch, but nothing as far as pain meds did. I just dealt with the nerve pain, the fentanyl took care of the rest.
Good luck and wishing for painfree days,
