What is the difference between a Ratio Fentanyl Patch and the Fentanyl Foil patches???
Nothing really other than trying to be abuse deterrent. the foil type is a generic made by Aveva/Teva, similar to Mylan in delivery method although instead of plastic, the patch is a very thin piece of metallic foil with a sticky adhesive layer containing the fentanyl. The medicine is embedded into the adhesive itself, like Mylan (and I believe the Ratio are the same way-the drug is embedded into the adhesive). Other patches, like the brand name Duragesic, have a gel reservoir and this gel type is easier to abuse because people will extract the gel and use it in ways it was not meant for which has led to death. Fentanyl is very very potent and there is a 3 day supply in each patch so for people stupid enough to extract the gel from the patch to absorb it sublinqually or to smoke it, they can get an overdose of medication very easily, pass out and stop breathing. Drug companies have to keep ahead of abuse by making drugs in ways to deliver the medication and deterring abuse at the same time.
