I have severe pain in my lower back due to metastic breast cancer. So I need 24 hr. pain relief. However, since I started on the patch I cannot sleep. Please help? Will this go away?
Hi - Just wanted to explain what happens when we take serious pain meds, as far as the sleep cycle. When our systems are slowed down from pain meds (which is what happens: respiratory depression, slowed heart rate-bp, slowed metabolism), sleep becomes a sort of artificially induced stage for the body. Its similar to when someone passes out or goes to sleep after too much alcohol... the sleep, although it feels like a deep sleep, is actually not really quality sleep. It may get better as you become tolerated to the meds, but at that point, you may need more of the med to actually give you pain relief. Its unfortunate, but a necessary evil when taking pain meds for 24 hr. pain relief. Best of luck.
