This is my 4th week on citalopram and I am sleeping better and anxiety seems to be getting a little bit better but I’m still having the horrible thoughts telling me something is wrong with me health wise. Is it normal to feel like this after a short space of time on the lowest dose of 10mg. I actually feel quite a flat feeling. Not happy and not sad but empty :-( how long do they take to properly work?
Hi, Lyns! From the National Alliance on Mental Illness:
"How Long Does It Take For Citalopram To Work?
Sleep, energy, or appetite may show some improvement within the first 1-2 weeks. Improvement in these physical symptoms can be an important early signal that the medication is working. Depressed mood, lack of interest in activities, and anxiety may need up to 6-8 weeks to fully improve."
Your doctor started you on a very low initial dose... the usual is 20mg... probably to avoid or eliminate any of the potential side effects. I'd try to be patient and give it a bit longer, but do let your doctor know how you're currently feeling. A dosage adjustment may be in order at this point.
