I'm looking for recommendations for a medication that will be fast acting and help control a panic attack once it's started. I use diazepam at present but find it takes quite a while to kick in.
I really thought by now that someone would have devised a delivery mechanism to get the medication into the system faster but I guess that would probably have to involve a syringe. Alprazolam seems to be the go to medication for panic attacks attacks and is approved for panic disorder while Valium is not. Oddly, alprazolam is listed as taking longer to work than Diazepam but I'm guessing it's not much time difference and that when it does kick in alprazolam is more effective. When I was using it for panic I recall that it seem to provide relief beginning at the 30 minute mark. The best part of Alprazolam for me was knowing that it could stop a panic attack - albeit after 30 minutes or so. One I experienced that a couple of times it gave me great comfort and I actually didn't take it that frequently. I carried Alprazolam around like a security blanket but the best part of the therapy wasn't taking the medication but knowing that I could take the medication and get relief. That knowledge alone seemed to diffuse the panic attack.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Meanwhile all the best.
