does anyone take a eye vitamin for macular degeneration? If so what brand. My dad is 79 yrs old and I saw he was taking equate, which looks like garbage to me. I see bausch and lomb, Icaps, visivite Thanks
I think I answered this question before. There is very little evidence that say any of these vitamins actually help dry macular degeneration. Equate vitamins are a Walmart brand and they are equivalent to brand name vitamins and just as good. Vitamins are vitamins. You want to look for a multivitamin with beta carotene and lutein when taking vitamins for macular degeneration. You dont have to spend a fortune for vitamins to be good. Most supplemental vitamins are just lost in the urine anyway-expensive pee. Water soluble vitamins are released into urine once the body has all it needs. Fat soluble vitamins can be dangerous in high doses. I worked for over 10 years for an eye surgeon/ ophthalmologist and he just told our patients to use whatever brand was least expensive. He told them that it doesnt hurt to take the vitamins but there is not a lot of evidence that says they help either. Ocuvite and Icaps were the sample vits he gave away but that was mainly because the reps gave them to us. If the Equate have lutein and beta carotene then they are fine. No need to spend more!
