I have tried everything on the market as I have had this problem for 50 yrs. There are only 2 meds. That have allowed me to sleep like a baby, and wake up with energy, and totally refreshed, they are halcion. 05mg. But the best was placidyl I believe 750 mg. You have no idea how great the placidyl work. Insomnia is tortourous, and when I get sick or after a major surgery, its amazing how much faster I heal from getting a ful 7 to 8 solid hrs of sleep,as opposed to 2 to 3 hrs. Sleep. Any help for me getting back on one of these meds. Please I need sleep!!!
I don't think they even use placidyl or make it anymore. It was a good sleeping pill. The concern now isn't our problems but keeping us from being addicts. This country has lost their minds. Halcion is a scheduled drug, that means most docs won't prescribe it. They have too much trouble with the DEA. Have you tried temazepam. That too is controlled, but didn't have as much other problems as halcion did.
donml, I'm so sorry your having problems with Insomnia. A few months back, I went through a spell, myself, for a few weeks. I tried everything. I wrote into the site here, asking for opinions, and suggestions. Some people couldn't believe I still couldn't sleep, when I told them what all I had tried. I even tried Temazepam, like kaismama mentioned. I think I was just too overloaded with stress, or something. I don't know. But I agree with kaismama, and now I am back on the Temazepam, and I'ts working great for me know. Thank goodness. I know first hand what no sleep does to your mind and body. I was getting sick, due to no sleep. But don't give out on hope. It got better for me, and I hope it gets better for you too. Try mentioning Temazepam to your doctor, and see what results you get from it. Just a suggestion. You need your sleep. I pray you get it. Good one, kaismama mentioned. Many blessings, Ruthie
donml - I feel your frustration, as well as the feeling that "If I could just get some sleep". I have had insomnia all my life and it is terrible affliction that few understand. Everyone thinks that it is a such an easy thing to fix and no big deal.
Even doctors have told me to "just practise proper sleep hypiene and you won't have insomnia anymore" or "You just need to retrain your body to sleep at the right time" or this oldie which used to be the most common "Go to bed earlier and you won't be so tired".
If I had a dollar for every time someone told me something like that ... well you know what I mean.
I have maintenance insomnia so just because I can usually fall asleep my doctor doesn't think its a big deal. "Just don't have anything to eat or drink for 2 hours before bed and you won't wake up"
That is total bullberries as I wake up after a couple of hours and then can't go back to sleep. And I don't wake up all groggy and sleepy like most people who wake up during the night. I'm wide awake instantly feeling more alert than most people are after 7 or 8 hours sleep.
Needless to say I have all kinds of health problems all because I don't get enough sleep.
Sadly, they did discontinue making Placidyl which worked very well.
Triazolam (Halcion) is so regulated that good luck is definitely needed to get a doctor to prescribe it. This is the medication that some people have done thing like driving, eating, or making phone calls and later having no memory of the activity.
Like you I just wish someone would make a drug just for people suffering from long term insomnia as sleeping pills just do not work for me.
I had a little luck with Amitriptylene but that was only short term.
Wish I could offer more help.
Sleepless in Canada
I am using Ambien, but, it's not working as well for me now. Someone told me to ask my doctor about Risperdal (generic Risperidone) but, I have not yet. Has anyone heard of this drug. Have been meaning to ck it out on webmd, but, just haven't yet. Not sleeping is horrible. You just keep trying to sleep and keep on thinking of things.
Hi, have you tried/considered Melatonin? It is a naturally occurring 'chemical' in our bodies. It works best if you sleep in complete darkness, no LED's even. I took it some years back and it was great. Does take a few days to work most effectively. I would still be taking it now, but i am unable to buy it in my country (England).
I've tried everything for my insomnia. A couple of years ago I finally broke down & tried samples of Seroquel 50mg. I had resisted for a couple previous years due to the stigma (& sadly I'm a mental health professional who ran programs for adults with severe mental illnesses). But I tried it & on a really low dose compared to what my clients were on, I slept (plus my anxiety was greatly reduced) great & have been taking it since. I haven't built a tolerance to it like all the insomnia meds prior. My neurologist told me my sleep study was indicative of someone with FM which of course I have. Either my Delta waves were really low or vice versa. He said the perfect med for this type of insomnia/FM is being tested with the FDA & not approved yet. Its the date rape drug which sounds terrible but apparently when used properly it can be medically useful. Hope this is useful info. ~ Di
donml, I too am on up there in years and have suffered lifelong with insomnia(as a result of being abused at night by my father..) As a younger man, there where many more options available and for me nothing ever worked as well as drug namad "Noludar". But it was discontinued around '89 or so for whatever the lame excuse was at the time.(it wasn't even a schedule 2 narc!!! ) After that I traveled to Mexeco for them for a while, but didn't like the possibility of going to jail, so I turned to an organic chemist friend who suggested a back pain drug called "SOMA". It changed my life! Sleepiness is acrualy a side effect and a bonus is it's not a schedule 2 narc! Another bonus is that you(anyone) won't take to much more than once!!! Most Unpleasant to say the least! Make sure your already in bed before you take and I bet you have as great an outcome as I God Bless and "happy trails"
