I am starting my first treatment of Remicade to day, treating colitis secondary to Behcet's Disease. What can I expect during and after this infusion? I've read the side effeccts, which are frightening, but can't really find any first person account of what to expect during the infusion and a day or so after. And how long before you see results?
I had my very first Remicade infusion a year ago... also for Behcet's Disease. Here's how it went for me: I go to UCSF for this, so went into the infusion room (after having my vital signs checked) where the nurse showed me to a recliner chair, then asked lots of questions about what I was experiencing, in the way of symptoms. She explained that they would be starting the IV and that the medication flow would start very slowly. After ten minutes, they double-checked to make sure I felt okay. The speed of the infusion was increased a bit. Then, the same thing occurred about twenty minutes later. This kept happening, until about the final hour, when the infusion rate was at normal speed. In total, it ran for approximately 2 1/2 hours, and the entire visit took about three hours. I brought my iPod Touch and a friend to visit with. They offer juices or water. I never felt any side affects, but the next few days was very tired. Then on subsequent infusions (I go every 8 weeks), I had some mild flu-type symptoms in the days following. Honestly, my flare-ups have been so much less so the drive down to SF has been worth it. I hope this helps. Likely by now, you have completed your first infusion. I'm sorry I didn't spot your question till now. I hope it went super-well for you!
