I was having a lot of uncomfortable internal and external burning and itching. My GYN to a culture which did not show yeast, but an excess of lactobacillus. I do not eat yogurt, or take probiotics.
It is pretty rare to get a UTI from lactobacillus, but not unheard of. One intriguing possibility is acquiring infection through prior use of probiotic preparations; however, you have denied any history of probiotic administration. A second possibility is that you first developed vaginal colonization from a different microorganism as a consequence of acquiring this microorganism from ingested foods. Then lactobacilli from dairy products (not just yogurt) which are normally harmless, latched on to the already compromised area, spread rampantly, and became what is known as an "opportunistic infection". In any case, it should be easily treated and unlikely to recur. Hope this helps!
