My husband and I have been discussing having another child. I have been taking Fluoxetine for the last four years. I understand that it is not reccommmended to continue taking Fluoxetine while pregnant. I was wondering what the preferred way to stop taking it would be.
"Fluoxetine may cause heart defects or serious lung problems in a newborn if you take the medication during pregnancy. However, you may have a relapse of depression if you stop taking your antidepressant. Do not start or stop taking Prozac during pregnancy without your doctor's advice. Fluoxetine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use Prozac without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby."
If you are going off of Prozac, your Dr. may wean you off slowly to minimize the chances of developing withdrawal symptoms, although this may not be necessary. Sometimes, possible symptoms of withdrawal from Prozac are actually symptoms of depression returning. In this case, your Dr. may decide to put you back on an antidepressant medication.
