I heard about and got this medication for the first time last night in the ER and got relief almost instantly. I woke this morning at 4am with another headache and went to the walk-in clinic and asked for the same thing. Again, almost instant relief. I asked the doctor for a prescription, so he wrote me one, but in a city with 60,000 people, there are NO pharmacies that carry it or can even get it from their retailer. What now???
You should be able to special order your specific prescription at a pharmacy. However, the time it takes for the pharmacy to receive the special order greatly varies from chain to chain. I have to special order a few of my prescription medications and I do so at a "mom and pop" pharmacy owned by the local hospital (it's not in the hospital), they literally get special orders in the next day, if the next day is a weekday. I found that with the chain store pharmacies, the fastest one came in in 4-5 days, the longest wait was 8+ days (Walmart, argh!), and the wait time for each chain pharmacy was unpredictable, meaning that there was no set number of days it takes for them to get orders in, unlike the pharmacy I go to. They can special order, so if you get a pharmacy tech telling you they don't, it's most likely BS so they don't have to go through the hassle of doing a special order.
It would probably be best to get it at another pharmacy if you get that answer anyway, because of their lack of willingness to do it in the first place could lead you to a longer wait time and possible other hassles. Granted, you won't be able to get it that day, but I would think a few days wait would be well worth it, especially if it's working that well for you. Is there any way that the hospital can give you a few take-home pills to hold you over until you're able to get your prescription filled? Explain the situation, that no pharmacy carries it, you'll have to special order it and wait some time, and you need something to carry you over in the meantime. They should be understanding. I know that if you go to the ER here and they release you after 8pm, they'll give you take home meds to hold you over until the next day when you can get your prescription filled (we have no 24 hour pharmacies here, and now none are open on Sundays, when they used to be open half-days on Sundays... imagine, a town with 2 pretty popular colleges that also caters to the regional rural villages and such, no pharmacies open on Sundays, whatsoever. Makes NO SENSE!). If I were you, I would start calling around to every pharmacy in your town to A: ask if they can special order medications they don't keep in regular stock and B: how long it takes for them to receive special order prescriptions counting from the day you hand your prescription over to the day they receive it and you can pick it up. I really hope you the best of luck and you're able to get this filled!
I get it for my migraines in a spray form - Migranal Nasal Spray. Got it filled about a year ago. You spray twice in each nostril, wait 20 min? then spray again. You feel awful for about 30 minutes then the migraine goes away. It was very comparable to the IV DHE I got in the hospital for my migraine. It containes:
DHE - dihydroergotamine mesylate 4.0 mg;
caffeine, anhydrose, 10.0 mg;
dextrose, anhydrous, 50.0 mg;
carbon dioxide, USP - qs;
purified water, USP, qa 1.0 ml.
Manufacturered by Mipharm, S.p.A. Milan Italy;
distributed by: Valeant Pharmaceuticals, Aliso Viejo, CA 92656
Hope this helps - my migraine went away with this medication. Regards, ElizaJane
Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone. I spoke to my neurologist today and asked for self injections of DHE and he agreed. I had to have it special ordered, but it will take less than 24 hours to get it in stock. I'm SO excited to be on a road to well being instead of this endless loop of frustration. Thanks again everyone!
