I am currenty perscribed 80mg Oxycontin. One a day. What is the Opana equivilent? I don't have insurance and Oxycontin is breaking my bank. So I was thinking... if I ask the doc, would he allow me to switch meds?
I am not sure what the equivelence is but I have taken Opana ER for 7 years and it is very effective. I am not sure how much the Oxycontin price is but Opana is very high priced. I recently lost my insurance and the out of pocket price for 40 mg twice a day and the price without insurance is $ 870.
But I contacted Opana's manufacturer and they are helping me to continue taking this medication. Since I have no insurance and waiting for my SS Disabilty to be approved they are going to give me the meds for free. They will also work with people with insurance but cannot afford the medication.
I suggest that you first go to the manufacturers website and check for any patient assistance you can get on the Oxycontin or Opana.
I hope you find some help but it does take alot of patience and time to find assistance for medications but they are out there.
I took Oxycontin about 12 years ago and then went to Fentanyl patches and then onto Opana. It is the best pain med i have found and i have had Chronic pain conditions for about 20 years. Take care.
If you are switching to Opana for the price you may want to call a local pharmacy and check the price. I take Opana 40 ER 3 x's a day and without insurance the price is around $1000.00 for 90 pills and the manufacturer is reformulating the coating and they are virtually impossible to find in many areas so you may also want to check the availability in your area.
Unfortunately I have to deal with the New formulation (June 2012) of the Opana 40mg and they reformulated all the way down to the 7.5mg. The price is astronomical! $915.00 for 60 - 40mg ER! I'm sorry, to answer your question, Opana's are approx. 2 - 2 1/2 times stronger than an Oxycontin (I switched to the Opana's around the time that they were reformulated) due to insurance. The new formula though is worthless! Endo Pharma. though is offering savings promotions. Such an effective medication is now ruined do to the abuse factor. I find the new form. ineffective and have actually passed whole pills in my stool, what an outrage and they cost more! I guess we need to wait for a generic formulation that hopefully uses the "TimeX" patent of the old Opana. I don't know though if the FDA (*#@! Dope assh--s), that just came to me! will let any old patent be manufactured. The wonder drug for pain is gone forever.
I have to ask "why" though is the old partial Oxycontin formulation (OC's) in the oxycodone 30 mg. break through meds still going strong? Massive street abuse articles stating it now is #1 on the streets with no tamper resistance what so ever. Somebodies getting paid some where! It's not fair is it? I just don't get it !
