I have been on Effexor-XR for 3 months for hot flashes and they are down from 16 a day to about 3-4 a day. Unfortunately, I am not sleeping. It takes me hours to fall asleep and then I awake at least twice an hour and have been averaging less than 5 hours of sleep per night, which is not nearly enough for me. What can I take as a sleep aid? I have tried Benedryl and over the counter sleep aids. Nothing has helped.
Do you take the effexor in the AM? It will keep me awake if I take it within about 8 hrs of bedtime, but early in the AM I'm ok. Watch what you take for sleep, since some sleep aids can add to the serotonin level and cause problems. Melatonin is one of them. Your pharmacist is a good source for help with that.
Hello dawncgal. I suggest you ask your doctor to perscribe a hypnotic. The otc sleeping aids seldom work for the more severe cases of not being able to get a sound nights sleep. Regards, pledge
My doctor is in the process of taking me off Cymbalta and putting me on Effexor XR for my depression and anxiety, I also have sleep issues which he had me on Silenor and that has not worked and gives me very strange dreams, so he is switching me to Lunesta, thanks for the heads up on the problems falling asleep on Effexor. Thats all I don't need is more problems sleeping.
