... I just started efexor xr for generalized anxiety disorder GAD, the doctor claimed that i will need to take the drug for a period of 3 to 6 months and then i will be cured; will stop the drug and will continue my life with peacefully without GAD, however searching the Internet I see that people continue taking the drug for several year and suffer a lot if the try to stop it. Is my doctor saying the truth or i will be trapped with such drugs forever
I suffer from PTSD, Anxiety, Panic attacks but I see a shrink, not a family doctor, Doctors get free samples of hundreds of meds, an what he did for me was try for 2 week periods at a time to find one that worked best for me, after about 10 different Anti Depressants, which Effexor is, we found Wellbutrin XR worked best for me, an it has a generic version which made it cheaper, as a male, I find, an was told before I started taking them, one major side affect is Wellbutrin causes, random, unexpected erections, an blew my sex drive throgh the roof, an unexpected benefit, haha, but they work well an u can start with 150 MG an see how that does works, then he added Ativan, an it's a mircle combination for me
Generally, an antidepressant will resolve your anxiety symptoms in 6-12 weeks. You may have to add a benzodiazepine for until the antidepressant "kicks in."
If the antidepressant works to resolve your symptoms in 6-12 weeks, you and your doctor will assess for remission in 6-18 months.
