Hello, I am a 20 year old who is taking 150 mg of venlafaxine (generic version of effexor) daily. I understand that I am not allowed to consume alcohol while on this medication, and I have been very strict about that rule for the past year and a half. But, I am turning 21 in a week and I want to celebrate with a single glass of wine, maybe even half a glass. I really want to be like everyone else on their 21st birthday, where I can legally a glass of wine at a restaurant. I know I can't get hammered and nor am I the type who would want to, but I just want a little wine in order to commemorate this day. Would that be okay? Or will there be serious consequences? This is likely to be a one time occasion.
Hi, julia! *Alcohol can increase the nervous system side effects of venlafaxine such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with venlafaxine. Do not use more than the recommended dose of venlafaxine, and avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you. *
That being said, no, one glass of wine will not be a major issue. Just don't plan on driving or operating a chainsaw. :-))
Congrats on your big 21st! Enjoy! Wildcat
