Smokes) has taken Effexor for over 6 years. She was recently told by an herbalist doctor that she is allergic to Effexor yet she had never shown any allergic reactions. She suddenly went off her medication without telling her doctor. Even though I have urged her, begged her, to call her doctor she had still not done so. Since her two brain surgeries she has been on permanent disability because of memory and judgement issues. I don't kind how to help her. I am scared for her. I live in PA and she lives in Oregon. Her husband is bipolar and had been on lithium all his adult life. He is of no help.., does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can help my best friend?

For now I understand she is on Effexor and drinks.
Interactions between your selected drugs
ethanol ↔ venlafaxine
Applies to: Alcohol (contained in alcoholic beverages) (ethanol), Effexor (venlafaxine)
Using venlafaxine together with ethanol can increase nervous system side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with venlafaxine.

Welcome, your question alarms me a great deal! Alcohol and effexor or any other benzo for that matter are an absolute time bomb waiting to happen. Also, one cannot go cold turkey off effexor, or any other benzo for that matter. They must be gradually tapered off of and when I say gradual I mean gradual. You friend is flirting with disaster and needs help immediately from someone who is a trained medical professional. Good luck. Please read the details about effexor on this website, it will support what I am telling you.
