a male of 43,from 14 years ago,has had kind of infection in his ear .the doctors say there is a tear in his left eardrum.they prescribed antibiotics to treat the infection .but these days antibiotics do not work. what kind of treatment do you suggest for him? i should also note secretion of his ear doesn`t have any bad odor .thank you
What makes you think there is infection? If there is drainage but has no smell, more than likely it is not infected. Some people have permanent holes in their eardrums and they may from time to time have some fluid come out. It is just fluid from the middle ear. It could be due to sinus pressure or allergies. Even with bacterial infection, there is rarely a reason to use antibiotics for an ear infection. Over use of antibiotics like this has lead to antibiotic resistance in many organisms. Most ear and sinus infections are caused by viruses however and these dont respond to antibiotics and those that are from bacteria will clear on their own without using antibiotics. He just needs to keep water out of his ears when he bathes and not to swim with his head under water to prevent water from going down into the ear canal and possible through the hole into the middle ear. Unless he has severe pain or a high fever or if the drainage become purulent and smelly, there is nothing that needs to be done!
