What causes DVTs in lower extremities?

If someone sits or lays a long time without real movement of the legs, like getting up and walking, the blood slows and can clot if you have the tendency for your blood to clot. That is why people who sit in airplanes for long periods of times have a tendency to get them. Walking moves the muscles and that moves the blood.
