My partner of 7 years lost his mind. He was slowly losing it for a year now, but his switch flipped completely within 4h on his trip to Thailand, and I suspect it is because he probably took some substance (I honestly don't know if he has an underlying condition, he has never been diagnosed though he has been to a psychologist several times before but they said it was stressed and gave him a book on mindfulness) He is going to be in Thailand now for 2 more weeks and I am fairly sure that no bodily harm will come to him so it can wait, but I am wondering this: which substance, if any, can cause mania like this? How long does it last? And how does it end? In depression or in psychosis or just go back to normal?
For a person who is prone to mania there are many medications than can trigger it. One reason doctors have to be careful prescribing antidepressants to someone who is manic/ depressive or what they call bipolar is they can induce mania for some. Other medications like steroids are notorious for causing mania. Mania, if this is what is going on, can last days to months some even years gone untreated. Some people will have a psychotic break if their mania goes untreated. Your partner could return to a normalcy, but if he is truly manic than it will most likely reoccur.
