I have been taking prylosec for several years and want change because I suspect it is causing me to have dry mouth at night. It is the only drug I take. I want another type drug. Prylosec is very effective for preventing the burning stomach.
There are things that can cause dry mouth besides meds. Like air conditioning, for one thing. Prilosec does cause dry mouth, but its a pretty rare reaction. The older stomach meds such as zantac and tagamet aren't in the same class as prilosec, and may work for you. Prevacid is the newest one over the counter, but that is a proton pump inhibitor like prilosec.
Prilosec caused me to severely dehydrate. I had sores on my tongue from being stuck to my teeth and the roof of my mouth. It didn't happen all at once-then I got sick. I definitely take zantac. What I like about Zantac is that it helps keep nausea down. Then when my stomach settles, I can stop taking Zantac . Zantac takes a few hours to work- but you can control the amount better than Prevacid and Prilosec. I won't take them again. I finally got doctors that agree with that.
I was on Omeprazole for 12 years and finally had to stop due to very serious side effects such as lung problems and urinary tract infections, sinus infections, anemia, Vitamin D deficiency, etc. so I started by taking 1 omeprazole every other day and in between took a zantac in the morning and one in the evening until I am now down to 1 zantac unless I get the heartburn during the day, then I will take a zantac. I have only been doing this for a few weeks so do not know the final results but there is a regiment of supplements which can be taken along with tagament. If anyone is interested, I will send it after I have tried it. It consists of Similase GS, DGL Licorice, Mastic Gum, and Heartburn Free. I am not recommending anyone to do any of these until they talk to their doctor. These are only opinions.
Try Zantac. Take 2 x 150 mg. I take this every day. Zantac and ranitidine are the same thing. If you get a prescription for the generic Zantac, it will be filled as ranitidine. Some insurance plans do not pay for it since it is OTC, but you can get 60 tablets for $4 on walmarts $4 plan if you have a prescription.
buying OTC is much more expensive ($15-$25 for 28 pills)..
It works great. I take it in addition to dexilant, but I have very severe reflux. If you are lucky enough to have relief from prilosec, Zantac will definitely work for you.
I take Zegrid OTC..1 in the morning 1 at bedtime and I have severe acid reflux and I cannot eat after 6 pm or I will be literally up all night throwing up... I have to watch everything I put in my mouth. The best medicine for me was protonix but very expensive I buy my Zegrid at Walmart and works really well!
