If the patient has respiratory problems, I would stay away from the benzodiazepines such as xanax or valium. There are many antidepressants that also control anxiety that might be appropriate such as Zoloft or Lexapro. Best to evaluate the cause of the respiratory depression first before starting any new medicine regieme.
