Does anyone know if it's necessary to do a slow weaning off Effexor XR if you're on a different antidepressant already? I'm only taking 75 mg of Effexor XR and 150 of Wellbutrin. I'd like to just stop taking the Effexor XR altogether since I only have 75 mg capsules and can't break them in half but don't want to shock my system too much. I'm not a wimp so minor side effects are fine but don't want to put myself in any danger either. Thanks!
Dropping Effexor XR but keeping the Wellbutrin?

Its a long story but I'm not able to ask for help with getting lower dosed tabs. My husband of 3 years (who is in the medical field) put me on the Effexor 3 years ago and I'm not seeing the Dr. who prescribed the additional Wellbutrin. My husband said I was "mean" and because I had a couple crying jags, decided I needed an AD. I think he confused "mean" with assertive and prescribed Effexor to keep me more complacent. Complacency has caused me a 75 lb weight gain. At this weight I will never NOT be depressed: ( However, upon mentioning my desire to leave ADs behind, my husband flipped out and said he'd be unable to deal with that-so I'm sure he'd be against prescribing me tablets. I'm tired of being a fat zombie and being under his thumb. I will stay on Wellbutrin if needed but I'm dropping the Efexor XR no matter what he thinks. Hopefully the day on/day off step down approach works. Thanks guys!
You may need that wellbutrin increased when you stop the effexor. I just stopped it while starting wellbutrin. I cut my daily dose in half for a week then cut that in half for a week then stopped it. I seem to have less of a problem with withdrawals from meds then others have, so it may need you to do it more slowly. Your dr is going to need to order the smaller dose caps tho.
I would say yes, some action needs to be taken, I would say not stopping abruptly would be the most logical thing. No, you're correct, do not open the capsules, I would ask the Dr for a solution, if he offers none, what you can do is alternate days, say, take it every other day for 2 weeks, then one every two days a few times, then one every three, by then you should be fine.
But my concern is the type of medication it is, and even at that you may still be hit with some weirdness for a while. I'd prefer the Dr be on board and stretch it out over 2-3 months. Sounds like a lot but it's really not, especially when your peace of mind at stake. I suffered greatly in a similar circumstance so I do not believe I can exaggerate.
hi maciemoo... you're funny, is the "moo" part of the name because you think you're a cow? I love your blatant, throw it out there honesty. I don't get on here much these days and partly its because I end up feeling so utterly disgusted and put off that I want to scream until my throat bleeds because I feel this is a very good website, I joined about 4 years ago, a great place to share experience, strength and hope, but NOT a place to take any ANY ANY advice on meds from complete strangers who are not licensed, certified, bonafide, whatever-afide, health care professionals!! I can only qualify myself to you by saying I am currently taking Effexor XR, this is the 2nd time. I also took Effexor in 2007-2008.
I had quit drinking 5 months earlier and a man I was dating didn't seem to think I needed to be taking an anti-d anymore, and because he had been sober for 4 years and was 6 years older than me, like either of these things matter, right? well I listened to him... and he DID try to split my capsules... he was quite a drug dealer back in the day and did a bang up job splitting my remaining 17 capsules up... why I didn't call my physician and share this with him and at least get lower dosage caplets is beyond me. I was already old enough to know better but had gone off anti-ds before and wasn't overly concerned. EFFEXOR XR PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE WEAN OFF SLOWLY! Sorry about the all caps, man oh man oh man, the worst withdrawal of my life. Oh, did I mention I was taking 300 mg? So I weaned off with 150 mg for 2 weeks. Effexor is a very strong anti-d!! Unlike SSRIs, Effexor does double duty and often called dual action anti-d (it's an SNRI, they are not as common, there are 3, the other 2 are Pristiq and Cymbalta)... I am also taking wellbutrin, but that is just to help me smoke less, which it is definitely doing... I have never taken wellbutrin by itself long enough to know if and how it works for me, curious but not enough to try... please friend me so we can talk... so much I want to ask but not on here. I'm Danielle!
