Hello I am married to an Alcoholic and his normal drink is 2-3 bottles of wine a night. After yet another relapse he was given Campal by the psychiatric DR about 6weeks ago. He was alcohol free for one week and for the last 5-6 weeks he's still taking the meds and drinking . In fact the consumption of alcohol has gone up. He's telling and I have seen him take his meds . Does Campral curve the desire and does it needs self control . And what is the side effects of drinking whilst taking Campral . Advice would be grateful .
I'm a three and a half year sober alcoholic and I have used Campral before. I took the standard 3 x 333mg tabs daily and it sent me a little hypomanic, I had a ball but did not drink any less at all. Campral is supposed to relieve the cravings once you have properly quit drinking and has no other effect than that as far as I am aware. Sadly it never occurred to me to take Campral once I had actually quit to see what benefit it might have had.
I eventually reduced my drinking down to a set 10 standard drinks a day and then just stopped in three weeks, 7/23/13. The first three weeks were the worst; the next 6 weeks were the worst too except I was used to it. It took a full 6 months before I stopped finding myself in a bottle shop trying to work out why the hell I was there. I still won't have alcohol in the house; in that respect I know my limits.
