I've been taking Wellbutrin for almost two years and drinking heavily the whole time. While my depression is much more manageable I've started to notice salient memory issues. Events from the beginning of my university career are fuzzy, I forget facts about friends and loved ones, and sometimes I have issues forming new memories. Has anyone else noticed severe memory deficits from mixing these two substances? Drinking is a huge part of my social life I enjoy and don't want to lose, but I'm worried I'm losing parts of myself to it.
Hi, Asd! You should NEVER drink when taking psychotropic drugs unless you want to kill your brain and liver.
You probably didn't come here for a lecture, but here it is.
Heavy consumption of alcohol alone can cause liver disease and any number of physical disorders. It can also cause Frontal Lobe Syndrome which manifests with memory loss, inability to make rational decisions, inability to problem solve, innappropriate behavior, neurological dysfunction, AND the inability to recognize your own symptoms.
I was a heavy drinker for several years; at four years sober I've only recovered some brain function through extensive therapy and training exercises.
Get off the sauce. Dependency on alcohol to have a good time could be a symptom of a severe, underlying problem.
I send my best wishes and hope you'll consider what I've said. WCV
Hey so I wont scold you since the others already covered that & Im sure common sense already informed you about all that anyway. As far as the inability to make/retain/recall memories the alcohol alone can cause that especially if you've been as you said heavily drinking for years. Plus what you considered heavy drinking 2yrs ago has probably increased to double that by now as your tolerance has grown. Now add Wellbutrin to the mix & thats scary bcuz I know just how badly wellbutrin can screw with your mind all by itself but together its just not safe. Not for you, your internal organs or your brain. Did your depression come before or after the alcohol? Its really hard to say what's causing the memory issues. It could be the depression, med & drinking together or any one issue in itself or combined. I think its time to talk to your dr about it honestly, let him check you out, run some test & help you come up with a plan to get your mind & body well. Its time to take care of yourself or youre gonna run out of time from the sound of it. Good luck
Drinking heavily, as you've already mentioned, is of the most concern. Alcohol is a depressant, so though it is fun in the beginning, the ultimate result is lower mood. Therefore drinking daily or even only on weekends could be sabotaging your efforts to control your depression. Anyway, I suspect the alcohol is the culprit causing memory loss. I've been on Wellbutrin for years with no ill effect. I use to drink, but stopped recently and feel even better for it.
