I'm an uninsured stage 3+ thyroid cancer survivor (17 years). I pay cash for doctor visits when possible. My current endocrinologist has told me that he will not extend my prescription until I get blood work and a PET scan - neither of which I can afford. Now that my medication has run out, is there an affordable alternative that I can switch to? What can I expect being off my thyroid pill?
Your thyroid, presumably yours has been removed, is essential hence the thyroid medication. Without some kind of thyroid hormone you will get sick and eventually die. The bloodwork should be cheap; the PET scan not so much. See if they will allow new prescriptions with bloodwork only (although the PET scan is an important diagnostic tool)?
