My sister lives in an african country and she is infected with malaria. She took artesiane 80 injection for a couple of times out of 5. Recently she discovered that she is pregnant. What should she do? Continue the vaccine? Change the vaccine? Stop it?
We have asked many doctors but their answers were different. Your help is very appropriated.
I found a pertinent study of women in the Sudan who had the Injection in either their 1st or 2nd trimesters and of the 62 studied, 2 had miscarriages at 20 and 22 weeks gestation- these women were also undergoing quinine treatment for malaria recurrence - the rest of the women had healthy babies up to the studies end when they were age one-year. This isn't necessarily enough to truly know what risks there may be, however it will hopefully give her some peace of mind. I wish you and your sister the best and truly hope things work out how she wants.
