Giving delsym for the cough every 4-6 hrs as told by vet. He said tracea was fine he didn't cough when it was pushed on. Heart lunges sounded fine. Don't know what else to do. He has untreated seizures because they are only once or twice a month. I'm terrified he will have a seizure during bad coughing spells. What else can I do for him? He's 21 pounds chihuahua terrier mix
Hi, Wrnglgrl! Sorry that your little guy is having such a problem. It sound like your veterinarian did a thorough physical exam and probably asked these questions: Has your dog been kenneled, groomed, or at a dog park recently? Does he have any history of skin or food allergies? Do you live in the US, UK, or Canada? Has he been vaccinated for bordetella or canine influenza? Does he have a nasal discharge?
Besides strict exercise restriction, there's not much more you can do but I'd let your veterinarian know that the cough is not responding so far. It's probably viral and the antibiotic is used to prevent complications such as bacterial infection or pneumonia. He may require a prescription strength cough suppressant or possibly a course of a corticosteroid to calm this down.
Best regards and good luck with him! WildcatVet
