Vet sold me Heart Guard with out doing a blood check to see if my dog had heart . worm. How do I know if my dog actually has heart worm. ? What will happen to him if he has heart worm & I start the Heart Worm pills?
Yes if you haven't maintained him on the pill over the winter, he will need a test for it. Its hard to tell if they have it until it gets really bad. Then he will look like a human with heart failure would be, Difficulty breathing, tired, loss of appetitie.
I don't know what would happen if you gave it to him and he had heartworms. I've just read the warning frequently.
Hi, Rudy! Yes, a dog should be tested for heartworm before starting any heartworm preventative and that requires a blood test. If the dog has a large infestation, the dead/dying heartworms can form embolisms which migrate through the bloodstream and stop the heart. If the dog has a low load of worms he might survive, but it's risky.
Even if you administer a preventative year-round it's a good idea to test periodically in the event of product failure, wrong dosage, a missed dose, etc.
Best wishes, WildcatVet
