is there a difference between wellbutrin and wellbutrin xl. just the fact that wellbutrin xl u take once a day and wellbutrin you take a few times a day? I want the same affects that wellbutrin xl has but dont know if wellbutrin taken a few times a day will be the same.
Wellbutrin XL is the longest-acting version of bupropion, taken just once a day.
Wellbutrin in order to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed. Wellbutrin will not work if you take it in a way other than how your Doctor prescribed it.
Do not self medicate.

Time release technology, also known as sustained-release (SR), sustained-action (SA), extended-release (ER, XR, or XL), time-release or timed-release, controlled-release (CR), modified release (MR), or continuous-release (CR or Contin), is a mechanism used in pill tablets or capsules to dissolve slowly and release a drug over time. The advantages of sustained-release tablets or capsules are that they can often be taken less frequently than instant-release formulations of the same drug, and that they keep steadier levels of the drug in the bloodstream.
Hope have been able to explain?
I too had to switch from the once a day to the multiple-times-per day, since the manufacturer of the drug had sold that part off to another company. I really do not like taking it more than once a day but thats how it must be done or risk harming one's self. I take 300 mg in AM and 150 mg at 4 pm. (these are the lilac-colored pills). Any later and I'm up all night. I feel that my moods are not as well even-keeled with this dosing format. WHen I was on the kind that was supposed to be taken once a day (the little white pill), I felt much more even keeled throughout the day, no up and down effect like I am experiencing now. I am trying to take it exactly the same time every day now, setting an alarm on my phone as a reminder. Thank you. I hope this helps.
They are supposed to work equally effectively. I have taken them both, although, almost the whole time since 2004 I have taken XL and I prefer it. I think it was just a very short time a few years ago that my Dr. tried me out on the regular Wellbutrin and it may have just been for financial reasons or something. (I am on a program where I am rated on my income and I get it for free.) I like the XL because It is only taken once a day so it's easier to remember if I have taken it. Also, Wellbutrin can cause problems with insomnia, which I had in the first couple years of taking it, and it was a lot easier for my Dr. to correct the timing of my dosage with the XL, rather than if I had to take 2 or 3 doses per day of the regular Wellbutrin.
I suppose it is all up to the individual, so you can try them both and see how they work, or if you are on one, you can try switching and if you don't like it or have trouble with a side effect such as insomnia, or you simply have trouble adjusting to taking the pills throughout the day, you can ask your Dr. to go back to whatever you are currently taking. I hope that helps a little.
