Been mmt for 3.5 yrs. I've had 1 baby then 2 mc then another baby and just recently another mc. My OB says its cause of methadone but clinic doc and several others say its safe. Does it cause mc? We really want another baby jw if its even worth trying.
Hello, do you not understand that when you take an opiate such as methadone when you are pregnant, when you give birth your baby will be addicted to methadone? To do this on purpose sounds cruel and irresponsible. Why would you even consider planning a pregnacy without being completely healthy first, for the sake of your baby? When a baby is born addicted to methadone they go through withdrawals just like you would have to if you stopped suddenly and if you quit while you are pregnant you risk your unborn child having a seizure and dying. -K
Methadone is a tough medication, putting many mothers in bad situations should she want a baby, or should there be an unexpected pregnancy. If the methadone was taken for addiction issues, I've heard that the pain clinics are very militant in that you have to stay on the methadone. The likely-hood of a relapse to the prior habit becomes much more likely. Addiction is a disease that never goes away, even if a person has been clean for twenty years, the potential still lurks around like a little demon hiding under sobriety. I personally take methadone for chronic pain, and is the only med that I've found that has given me relief in a substantial way. It really is a drug that is double edged, great and evil at the same time.
I have never heard of methadone causing any miscarriages, although it would put the baby into withdrawals once it is born into the world, just as if you or I had stopped taking our meds. It really is not a very good thing to put such a little body through, especially when experiencing the world for the first time. I would talk to your doctor about how to get off the methadone as painless as possible (pain clinics will make you stop or taper quickly, when taken for pain however they will taper you very slowly, causing little discomfort). If given the opportunity, the methadone really would need to be put to a stop at least temporarily.
Best of luck to you!
I had a baby on Methadone and I will NEVER forgive myself. To this day, five years later, he still has very bad emotional issues. And I will never forget seeing my newborn son in so much agony because of ME. It is MY fault. I was not careful enough, and that little boy paid dearly for it. It's not fair, it's not right, and I can't go back and change that. I will NEVER get over what I did to such a sweet, innocent soul.
hey, i have had a full HEALTHY pregnancy on methadone. i was only on 40mgs, my son had a little discomfort the first 2 days, but it was determined that he was not withdrawals. & he does NOT have emotional issues because of it. However, i did have a mc before him, but i was on mental health meds. Lamictal & Prozac. so i would not listen to the ones trying to judge you.
I just found out that i am pregnant again & like before i just have to be careful. Because if i am sick or in pain then so is my baby. & i have been told by NUMEROUS doctors that staying on it is BETTER than getting off of it. AND that of all my pain medications METHADONE IS THE BEST CHOICE!!! I hope this has been helpful!!! GOOD LUCK
