my friend who had a botched surgery and has chronic pain believes that her rx for oxycodone, which is 6 325mg daily, causes her depression to be much worse than without the drug, but cannot stand the chronic pain. Is there medical proof that oxycodone causes depression?
Does oxycodone cause depression?
Added 5 Jul 2010:
just got an email today that my friend of 40 yrs. is going to detox herself at home, so will be out of commision until she "comes out the other side" as she said. I wrote back that my prayers and thoughts will be w/her, but I don't think she can do this.........I think she's been on about 60 mg. daily for a few weeks and it was 40mg. for almost 2 yrs. before that, what do others think? BTY, if she was depressed before I am thinking, this is going to be REAL depression and she's not a very strong person in regard to feeling ill, in fact not strong at all in that dept.
It can be the actual pain that is causing the depression pain usually makes you feel useless cause your in so much pain there is only so much you can do. The medication can also do the same because these are narcotics and its just like if you drank a beer you get sad and start thinking about things that cause that depression. So really it can be a number of things not neccessarily the medication causing the depression but what is going on in his/her life in general.
For me its the total opposite. When I take them, I feel like a million bucks. I feel like everything is perfect and I can do anything. I can talk for hours, am very interested in everything and am just very happy in general.
On the other hand, when I stop taking them, I do get depressed really bad. Even though I know that its from the withdrawl, I still cant get myself out of the hole and just dont feel like doing anything or want to talk to anyone really. But as soon as I would take a pill again, Id bounce right back to where everything is great. I take antidepressant meds but they dont come anywhere close to what oxycodone does for depression releif for me.
Hi everyone, I just want to add my two cents here, I was on opiates (prescribed) and I became quite depressed. I was a zombie on OxyContin (sorry guys, I know you have heard my story before) so I cold turkeyed off of that junk! I am no longer depressed and I have my life back. I also noticed that my pain level went WAY WAY DOWN after I flushed the Oxy! Cold turkey withdrawal is no picnic, but it is better than being a slave to those damned opiates!!! Good luck to your friend, and to you. sweetlemon
