My doctor wants me to go off omeprozole which I've taken for years because of it's interaction with Plavix which I definitely need. He says Protonix, Zantec, or Prevacid are a better choice for Plavix to be fully effective. What does this mean?
Yes, omeprazole (proton pump inhibitors) does interact with Plavix ... basically reducing its effectiveness. Protonix and Prevacid are also proton pump inhibitors so they will interact with Plavix as well.
Zantac (ranitidine) belongs to the class called H2- antagonists, and these don't interact with Plavix. So Zantac is the only one out of the ones your doctor has suggested, that is safe to take with Plavix.
