I am taking bethanechol chloride (generic for Urecholine) to counteract urinary retention due to a swollen prostate and some scar tissue that formed at the bladder neck after a TURP operation. Apparently, the muscles in the bladder have become weak over time, due to urinary retention caused by the swollen prostate. As a result, the bladder is less "elastic," and the muscles in the bladder wall are unable to squeeze urine out of the bladder. This is causing me to retain urine.
My questions: Will the bethanachol have any curative effect, or will I have to take it for the rest of my life? If I do have to take it long-term, will its effectiveness gradually decline? If I have to take it long-term, will doing so in any way endanger or damage any part of my body?
