My Dr. recently prescribed Tegretol for me because I have epilepsy. I am extremely sensitive to Elavil. It makes me zombie-like, nearly immobile. Because of this sensitivity to Elavil, the pharmacist doesn't want to fill the Tegretol. My Dr. disagrees w/ my pharmacist. I'm very anxious about this situation. I also have fibromyalgia, so I confront pain and exhaustion daily. Trying something that could have similar side effects to the Elavil is scary.
My daughter has taken tegretol since she was 10 - now 19 years. The most noticable side effects we saw was some increased sentitivity to light and she bruises fairly easy. As she grew the tegretol had to be increased, but she had good control until just a few years ago when she started having a change in her seizures. She has now tried numerous other drugs (some clinical trials) in addition to the tegretol but still feels the tregretol is her most reliable drug as most of the newer drugs have not improved her condition. Tegretol appears to be a good well tested drug.
I have had epilepsy since I was 11 (from an accident)I am 56 and have tried many combinations of anticonvulants. I found Tegretol and phenabarbitol to work the best of all. Dilantin, Valporic acid..and tegretol alone did not work.
It took a combination of2-3 anticonvulants to control the seizures.
